Meaning of Colors in Movie Clips

Two movies which I choose are Harry Potter and Center Stage
1.Harry Potter
This scene is about Potter and Dolores Jane Umbridge. She waits for Potter in her office. When Potter comes, she asks him to write “ I must not tell lies’’ using her magic quill pen. As we know, Dolores Jane Umbridge is a bad woman, she just wants to punishment Potter. So when Potter writes on paper, the same sentence appears on his hand with sharp pain. And Umbridge feels satisfied and smiles.

The main colors used in movies are mauve and pink. First, they can bring magic atmosphere, especially mauve color. Second, a sharp contrast is formed in this way. Umbridge always wear pink clothes and make her voice cute, however, she is an evil woman. If we only see her clothes and office, maybe we will think she is a kind and gracious woman, however, when saw what she did to Potter, we find she is totally different as we thought.

In my country, China, pink and mauve don’t have fixed meaning. But in most situations, mauve give us a romantic and dreamlike feeling. And pink is a cute and soft color, most of Chinese young girls like this very much, it is a positive color.

2.Center Stage
This scene is a performance about ballet. I think the performance has three parts. First, a row of ballet dancers are practicing. Second, a handsome man who rides the motor comes. And one of dancers dances with the man and goes away with him. Last, they come back, the coach is very angry. Because he also likes her and then fights with the rider. Finally, the dancer doesn't go away with anyone and is independent like before.

The main color in this movie clips is white, black , purple and red. The ballet dresses and sleeves of male dancers are white, just like swans. And the stage is centered with purple light with black background. The audience is also shown in black. The purpose is form a contrast to concentrate dancing and make dancers stand out. Purple light on stage make a dreaming and beauty feeling with white dress. In the end, that dancer in red dress does a solo dance. I think it stands for independence and freedom as well as paasion.

In China, white and black also often are used in art to form a sharp contrast to make the main factor stand out. In most cases, white is a pure color, just like the swan’s leathers. Black belongs to dark color, it is often negative. And red is a very lucky color in China and it also means passion.
