An interpretation of meaning of colors in movies clips

The colors have great influence in our way to see things. Some colors can represent themselves as stimulant, optimist, serene, peaceful, negative, depressive. Once you recognize the power of the color, you can use them as stimulus to provide information to the audience, you can capture its attention for what you consider as most important.

Analyzing the final dance scene in the movie Center Stage we can see the contrast of white and black, the fight between opposite colors, i.e., the fight involving bad and good. Most of the characters in that scene are using white and suddenly appears a man wearing black. The latter color was used to show the contaminating of the pure represented by white color. The man gets the purity of the girl, transforming her white dress in a dark red dress and steals her from the man wearing white, which demonstrates a competition between them. The scenario of the fight is characterized by a New York in a sunset moment, one mix of the color as it can be seen in the backstage, and so a mix of feelings. The black color is used also as a synonym of sexuality.
At the end both men are using dark colors which mean that now they are fighting equally. The girl changes her attitude and demonstrates that she is the one who is on command; she became an active person which is represented by the strong red color.

Those colors used in this movie to capture the attention of the audience have the same meaning in Brazil. The white is used to represent the purity and good, and black the bad. The red activity, but this color is more related to passion, and also aggressiveness.
In the movie Down to Love we can see a mix of different colors ranging from blue, and green, red, yellow, pink to white. When the main actress (Barbara) gets into her apartment, she experiences a sensation of color world, once her apartment looks more like a doll’s house than a real world, even her telephone is pink. It seems like the actress wants to hide something about herself, about her identity, since she’s living a fantasy life. She writes about how woman must behave like a man in relation to sexuality, but her personal life shows a different thing. As a woman who encourages others to have such behavior, she looks more like a sentimental person, because pink evokes love, pure love.

In relation to Catcher Block, the guy that she likes, his affairs wear always blue, because this color represents for him a pursuit of pleasure. In the other hand, Barbara presents a collection of dresses with distinct colors. The different colors of her dress state the phase of humor that she is going through. It changes from the yellow, when she is very exciting about meeting Catcher Block to violet demonstrating her irritation about the postponing meeting with Catcher.

As we could see in the scene the main color is pink which means a mix of red with white. In my culture I’d say that represents a romance, but not a romance related to the sexual act, but to spiritual love. The violet also represents a feeling of anger and the yellow happiness.

Both movies work very well with the composition of colors to detain the attention for a specific scene. All the colors used for that purpose have the same meaning in my country to express feeling and states. The similarity, maybe I could say that, is related to the great influence that USA exert in my country.
