Use of colours in movie clips

I choose two movie clips. One is Center stage and the other is Blades of Glory.

1. Center stage

In this clip we can see a performance of ballet. At fist a team of girls dance and then a guy with a motorcycle is coming and he start dancing. Then a girl dance with him and they go out. They come back, but the teacher of the team is angry because he is in live with her. Then they have a fight but finally the girl doesn’t want anyone.

In this scene I noticed three colors: black, white, and red. At first one of the girls wear black while the others dancers wear white. I think this big contrast happen in order to understand better the purity of the girls. Then the guy come with black clothes. I think that can help us to understand his role better. He want to drift one of the girls, so the black symbolizes something bad. Then the girl who dance with the guy change clothes from white to black. The red emphasize at the passion which the guy and the girl have.

In my country, the black symbolizes something bad and sometimes the devil.Generally the black mean something negative as in the movie. The white in the movie mean something pure or something clean. In Greece also white has a positive meanings. It express the purity and the innocence. Finally , in Greece the red express also the passion and the love but sometimes also can be considered the colour of the devil.

2. Blades of Glory

In this clip there is an ice skate show. The strange thing with this is the.couple of two men. This is strange because it’s not common two men being couple and dancing on ice. While they are dancing one of them fell down, the other encourage him to stand up and continue their show.

We can see three colors: white, red and blue. The ice is white. That can help us to pay more attention to the two others colors which are red and blue. The one man wear red clothes and the other blue. All the signs the ads and the letters around the ice are red and blue. We can say that red and blue are two colors with opposite meanings. Red means something hot and blue something cold. The two colors can represent the two men the balance between them.

In Greece, the white can express the puriness of something. The red mean passion love or something evil. Finally the blue can express the serenety or calmness and can express also all my country’s culture because greek flag has blue, all the houses in islands are blue and of course because of sea.
