THE INTERPRETATION OF COLOURS AS RELATED TO THE NIGERIAN CULTURE

The movie- Center Stage

As a lay man, the use of colours in movies might mean nothing but a mere background and lightening except if an indepth understanding of the theme of a particular movie is bieng put into consideration.

A script being produced into a movie has its colour selection, seperation and combination based on the theme of the movie. These colours help to depict the role of the hero as its popularly called in either a positive or negative way depending on the theme of the movie to be produced.

The movie Centre Stage is an emotional drama where a team of young ballet dancers compete for places in a prestigious dance troupe. It shows a love triangle between the hero and two other members of the dance group. This write up would concentrate more on the use of colours during the final dance competition as potrayed in this movie.

The final competion seemed to have three different scenes with almost same colour combinations/seperation but being interchanged at every new scene except for the last scene. These colours are white, black, gold, red and purple.

Scene 1- shows balerina girls wearing a white costume(which potrays purity in Nigeria),and the heroine was stylishly detected amongst the crowd by her admirer who wore a black costume (black which means threatening or menacing in Nigeria in this context)of dancers as they danced to Micheal Jackson's "The way you make me feel" depicting that the ballet was centred around emotional feeling;love and jealousy as seen in the clip. A little gold highlight was used back stage to create a contrast between the white costume and d brightly coloured dance floor which created a warm environment.

Scene 2- shows the use of same colours in a different way still potraying a warm and romantic atmosphere with a highlight of blue ( which means positivity/serenity in the Nigerian culture)as the other two lovers in the love triangle struggled to win the heart of the heroine in their respective ways with a song of love and jealousy playing in the background.

Scene 3- which is the last and most colourful scene of the competition created a very sexy, aggressive and vital environment with the backstage painted in red as well as the heroine dressed in red(which means passion, aggressiveness and vitality in the Nigerian culture)and the balerina girls in a deep shade of purple. The red was used to create a contrast between the stage and the other dancers which made concentration on the subject/theme of the movie quite easier. It also portrayed the aggressive yet sexy heroine who had released herself from the love triangle she found herself in earlier scenes thereby potraying a stronger character. The choice of music in this scene blended well as it sounded realy vital complimenting the bright colours being used as compared to previous scenes.

A mosaic depicting the colours used on stage in the movie Centre Stage.

The colours used above would have been used same way in this context in my own culture as they potray similar meanings as that which the Director of the movie tried to communicate to his/her audience.
