The concept of freedom in South Korea comes from the Chinese character "自由" which means 'exist by itself'.
I'm not sure when is the first time to have an interest about the freedom in South Korea. But, I guess, independece from Japan to Korea, which in 1950, this was a great deal of interest in freedom. At that time, I think, the meaning of freedom was that had lots of choices to do something. It's like a 'Negative liberty'. After that, for freedom and equality in accordance wih the priority of democracy and communism were the two opposing systems, and eventually was split into two countries, North and South Korea. And then, in the 60's to 80's was focused on economic growth, starting this period, the interest in freedom went away.
From now on, differ from the western people, I didn't think about the meaning of freedom in my daily life. But, I can say that freedom to allow human to human life is a minimum prerequisite to live as an owner of our own lives.
